About Us

We are located in the north east of Scotland. We design and build micromalting systems for the malting, brewing and distilling industries. We also design and build bespoke scientific and laboratory equipment for various life science departments of British universities.

We have been involved with Micromalting systems since 1986, and as our name implies, we will make whatever system you can dream up. We will bring our skills and know-how to make your ideas work. We can also show you tried and tested machines to see if these will meet your requirements.

Complementing the production environment

Our machines are aimed at complementing the production side of malting, and to mimic what happens in a production environment. To this end we have always kept the kiln separate from the steep/germinator. We believe that a single vessel cannot adequately serve as a steep tank and a kiln; the processes are just too different from a production point of view.

Another reason for keeping the two separate is that whilst kilning one set of samples another set can begin the steeping process. As barley malting tends to follow the pattern of two days steeping 4 to 5 days germination and two days kilning, kilning one set whilst steeping another fits into a 7 day or weekly cycle, rather than a cumbersome 8 or 9 day cycle potentially needing to bring in staff over a weekend.

Continuous improvement

We are always looking for ways of making our machines more efficient. This includes mechanical testing at each stage of manufacture. All the stainless steel welding is dye penetration tested and pressure tested during assembly. Although the frames are made from mild steel, all the working tanks are stainless steel.

All of the welding and assembly is carried out in our workshop, along with the circuit board design and assembly. The stainless steel parts are all laser cut using nitrogen to avoid oxidation of the cut edge.

Full training and installation

When you buy our equipment we install and commission the machines on site. We will also spend time training your personnel in the use and maintenance of the machines. This is included in the price of the machines, and we don’t leave your premises until you are happy.

We can produce a full range of sample pots and other accessories for your existing equipment. Items can be constructed to your precise specification, or we can determine the specification from an existing item.
